Welcome to Ten Thousand Ways

As the Perseid meteor shower draws near, so does the Ten Thousand Ways gathering. Ten Thousand Ways 2008 (10KW'08) begins at 4:00 PM on Friday, August 8th, and ends at 2:00 PM on Monday, August 11th at Beaver Sulphur, in Jacksonville, Oregon (about an hour and a half from Ashland).

Ten Thousand Ways? What Does That Mean?

The name Ten Thousand Ways represents the infinite possibilities that exist for different ways that humans can live, and also the belief that no one right way exists.

The Ten Thousand Ways gathering, held yearly, aims to bring people from disparate backgrounds together through this simple idea; the gathering exists for those who believe that our species can live in many more ways than we live now. At Ten Thousand Ways, we can meet like-minded individuals, make new friends, share and trade ideas, and network.

While many of us have read the books of Daniel Quinn (Ishmael, Story of B, My Ishmael) or Derrick Jensen (A Language Older Than Words, The Culture of Make Believe, Endgame), or studied deep ecology or permaculture, attending Ten Thousand Ways requires none of this; just arrive with an open mind about the possible future of humanity.

Open Space

As usual we'll be using an Open Space format to organize the event (see www.openingspace.net for more information on the Open Space format). This year we'll be discussing A New Story to Live In. What stories can you imagine that will guide you towards the world in which you would like to live? How can you begin enacting these stories?

Food, Glorious Food

Offered: 11 group meals (to include some snacks), $5 per meal per person.

Ideally, we will share most meals between attendees, on either a large or small scale, with the costs and work split between those attending. (We also hope to supplement this food with U-pick and local gathering/foraging as possible.) Please ensure that you bring at least $5 per person per meal, for 11 meals, as well as any ideas regarding what you would like to eat. Sharing recipes is highly encouraged! We will spend any remaining cash on purchasing firewood for cooking, and for our nightly campfire circles.

We will organize the three food-related tasks of fire and water, cooking, and clean-up with a roster that attendees can sign up for. These volunteers will assist our volunteer leaders, who themselves will help organize our overall food plan.

How to Register

If you would like to register, please join the Google Group and sign the sign-up sheet. Then participate on the group message boards to help make this year's gathering a success. If you would like to car pool, you may be able to find people who are attending in your area or on your route. If you require any dietary accomodations, please mention them so we can plan meals accordingly.

We hope you will join us once again for this special gathering, during the height of the Perseid meteor shower, at Ten Thousand Ways.
